A Cosy Year-Round Whitby Weekend: Brewery, Distillery & a Seasonal Vineyard Escape

Whitby has a special kind of atmosphere that works in every season. Winter brings dramatic seas and warm glows from pub windows; summer offers long evenings and salty breezes; and spring and autumn add colour, calm and that unmistakable coastal charm.

If you’re planning a relaxed break — whether it’s a couple’s escape or a weekend away with friends — this itinerary brings together some of our most-loved Whitby experiences: Whitby Brewery, Whitby Distillery, and, when the weather warms, the beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay Vineyard.

As a small family-run business who’ve spent years exploring Whitby ourselves, these really are the recommendations we share most often with our guests.

A Cosy Place to Call Home

A good weekend starts with a comfortable base. Vale Head Apartment is peaceful, modern, dog-friendly, and close enough to walk into Whitby without being caught up in the centre. It’s somewhere you can return to after a day of exploring, kick off your shoes and properly unwind.

Day One: Arrive, Wander & Ease Into Whitby

Most people arrive mid-afternoon, which gives you the perfect gentle start.
After settling in, head towards the harbour and let Whitby introduce itself.

Church Street, the swing bridge and the lanes around the waterfront are lovely for a first wander. There’s no rush — Whitby is one of those places that reveals itself slowly, and that’s part of the charm.

For dinner, choose one of the many cosy pubs or independent restaurants dotted through the town. You can go casual or make it a bit more special — Whitby suits both.

A cocktail to start your weekend

If you fancy a nightcap, Macy Brown’s on New Quay Road is a great choice. Warm lighting, excellent cocktails and an easy atmosphere make it a lovely place to toast the start of your break. A gentle walk back afterwards rounds off the evening perfectly.

Day Two: A Day of Whitby Flavour — Brewery & Distillery

This is the heart of your weekend: relaxed exploring, good food and drink, and some of Whitby’s best independent spots.

🍺 Morning: Whitby Brewery — Abbey Views, Pizzas & Live Music

Sitting just below the Abbey, Whitby Brewery offers one of the most memorable views in town. The taproom is rustic, relaxed and full of character, with indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather.

Why we love it

  • Beer brewed on site

  • A friendly, unpretentious atmosphere

  • That iconic Abbey backdrop

  • Great for couples or small groups

The pizzas everyone talks about

Their stone-baked pizzas are incredibly popular and often sell out quickly. If you want one (and they’re truly worth it), aim for an early lunch.

Live music

There’s often live music throughout the year, adding even more to the atmosphere. It’s always best to check their social media to see what’s on.

A proper brewery tour

Whitby Brewery works in collaboration with Whitby Town Walking Tours to offer a dedicated brewery tour — a focused session that explores the brewing process, the story behind the brewery, and its unique location beneath the Abbey. A great choice if you want to go deeper than a quick visit.

🍸 Afternoon: Whitby Distillery — Tours & Tastings

From the brewery, wander back down into town and make your way to Whitby Distillery, known for its award-winning, small-batch spirits.

Tour times (1 hour)

Tours run on:

  • Thursday: 5pm

  • Friday & Saturday: 11am, 1pm, 3pm

  • Sunday: 11am, 1pm

Pre-booking is essential, particularly on weekends.

What to expect

Friendly hosts, generous tastings and fascinating stories inspired by Whitby’s coastline, moorland and folklore. It’s relaxed, interesting and perfect for an afternoon activity.

⛪ Short on time? Visit their Church Street shop

If a full tour doesn’t fit your plans, Whitby Distillery’s new Church Street shop offers a drop-in alternative. You can sample small tasters, browse their spirits and chat with the team — ideal for slower, spontaneous weekends.

Evening: Whitby After Dark

Whitby’s evenings have their own kind of magic, especially around the harbour. If you’d like to keep the night going, here are a couple of places we always recommend:

The Endeavour
Warm, welcoming and often filled with live music. A great atmosphere, especially for couples or friends wanting a laid-back night out.

The Fleece
A firm favourite of ours and usually our last stop. Cosy, characterful and just the right level of lively — the perfect place for a final drink before heading back.

If cocktails are calling, Macy Brown’s is still a lovely choice for an intimate end to the evening.

Day Three: Slow & Steady — Coffee, Views & Goodbyes

Your final morning in Whitby deserves to be unhurried.
We usually start the day at Mr Cooper’s Coffee House — relaxed, friendly and an excellent place to enjoy that first coffee of the day.

From there, wander towards the harbour or out along the pier for one last look at the sea. It’s a peaceful way to round off your trip before heading home.

🌿 Optional Add-On (April–October): Robin Hood’s Bay Vineyard

If you’re visiting in spring, summer or early autumn, consider adding a visit to Robin Hood’s Bay Vineyard.

Useful details

  • Tours last around 1.5 hours

  • Pre-booking is essential

  • Not available in winter

  • A lovely countryside contrast to Whitby’s coastal charm

It works beautifully as a relaxed addition to Day One or Day Three.

A Weekend That Feels Effortless

A Whitby weekend shaped around the brewery, distillery and — in the warmer months — the vineyard is relaxed, flavourful and full of character.

Whether you’re visiting as a couple or with friends, Whitby gives you the time and space to slow down, enjoy good food and drink, and soak up the atmosphere at your own pace.

We’d love to welcome you to Vale Head Apartment and help you make the most of your time here.
